Role
The Commission is empowered to advise the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors on the initial and continuous implementation of the County's Hazardous Materials Ordinance (Chapter 7.100). This includes effective methods of providing the public with information on all other matters pertaining to the use, transportation, handling and storage of hazardous materials affecting the County.
Commission Structure
The Commission consists of eleven members, all residents of Santa Cruz County, appointed by the Board of Supervisors. The implementing ordinance (Chapter 2.92) details the specific membership criteria and appointment procedures. The Hazardous Materials Program Manager serves as the Secretary for the Commission.

Biennial Report
At the end January following every odd numbered year, the Commission submits a biennial report to the Board of Supervisors and the County Administrative Officer. Regular Meetings
Meetings are held beginning at 9 a.m. on the 4th Wednesday of the month (the November meeting is held on the 3rd Wednesday due to the holiday) on a bi-monthly schedule (January, March, May, July, September, November). Meetings do not occur when there is not a quorum, no agenda items, or the Hazardous Materials Team leader position is vacant.
